Choose the approach by the merchandising job, then inspect how a particular feature selects its products and what the shopper does with them. “Complementary” describes an add-on relationship in Shopify’s recommendation surfaces; “frequently bought together” appears as a product-bundle category label in the Shopify App Store. Those labels do not specify one universal selection method or purchase flow. Shopify recommendation guidance · Shopify App Store FBT category.

Compare the shopper job and selection inputs

Approach Merchant goal What may select the products What the shopper sees or does What the label does not establish
Complementary recommendation Offer another item alongside the selected product Merchant-selected pairs or a documented recommendation strategy An additional product choice; the exact placement depends on the feature and theme That the accessory fits every variant, or that the block appears on every theme
Related recommendation Show alternatives or other products associated with the selected product The implementation’s documented manual or automatic strategy A related product card or another feature-specific action A single meaning across every Shopify surface: Help Center guidance describes similar alternatives, while developer documentation says related recommendations can include similar or complementary products. Frequently-bought-together display or bundle Present products together for consideration The app’s documented rules, which may be curated or use other signals; verify the specific implementation Inspect whether the app combines selection, add action, price and discount or leaves them separate That every app uses order history, that a bundle is discounted, or that co-purchase proves compatibility. Shopify uses FBT as a product-bundle category, not as a universal implementation contract. App Store category

Shopify’s Search & Discovery guidance distinguishes manually selected complementary products from automatically generated related recommendations, and documents strategies such as purchase history, product descriptions and related collections. Its developer documentation says related recommendations can include similar or complementary products, so the meaning depends on the Shopify surface. The App Store’s “Frequently bought together” category does not define how a particular app selects or adds its products. Check the current Shopify recommendation guidance, Storefront API recommendation intents, and the app’s own description and shopper flow.

For a new or sparse-history catalogue, Shopify says merchants can manually select up to 10 complementary products, while the purchase-history strategy for automatic related recommendations requires prior sales. That distinction does not predict how a third-party FBT app behaves. Ask whether the specific app can start with little sales history and how much product, variant and source review it requires; then check the exact variant and source, and separately test the chosen product-page, cart-page or drawer placement in your theme.

Relevance is not fit evidence

For a cap that must fit a bottle, check the exact model and thread in the product descriptions; a frequently-bought-together label cannot establish that fit. If your own orders suggest customers often choose beans with a grinder, an FBT display may help surface that buying pattern, but inspect how the app selects products and what the shopper adds. The Synthetic example shows the distinction: Benchmark Flip Cap 42 is supported by its passage “Optional flip-top cap for bottles with the 42 mm thread used by Benchmark Trail Bottle 42.” read alongside the Benchmark Trail Bottle 42 passage “Synthetic test product, not for sale. A 600 ml bottle with a threaded 42 mm opening. Supplied with a plain screw lid. Optional flip-top caps must specify the same 42 mm thread. A second bottle is a substitute, not a complementary accessory.”; Benchmark Travel Cap stays held because its description says: “A replacement travel cap. Compatible bottle models, thread and opening size have not been specified. Ask the merchant before pairing.” Co-purchase can suggest a candidate; it cannot supply a missing product fact.
