A recommendation can be relevant without being compatible. Shopify uses “complementary” for a product offered in addition to the selected product; that relationship label does not tell you whether a particular size, thread or interface matches. Shopify’s recommendation guidance describes the platform’s recommendation controls, while the fit check still depends on the product facts behind the pair.

Check the facts that make this pair work

Start with exact identity. A product title alone may hide several options: check the specific item and the option values the shopper will choose before judging fit. A similar product name cannot tell you whether the selected option has the required thread or interface. Then ask which details matter to this pairing:

  1. Identity: are these the exact products the shopper will receive, rather than a similar model or a nearby variant?
  2. Interface or size: does a source state the dimension, thread, connector or other interface the two items need to share?
  3. Intended task: does the accessory description say what it is designed to do with the main item?
  4. Included parts: does either product depend on an adapter or another part that is not included?
  5. Current listing: do the selected products and variants still have the description and availability you reviewed?

Not every pair needs every measurement. The important question is whether the source establishes the particular fact that makes this accessory work with this product and variant.

Keep the evidence attached to the claim

Use a simple evidence trail: exact product and variant → relevant fit statement or dimensions → source context → check for contradictions. Quote only what the source says. If a product description gives a thread size but says nothing about an adapter, do not turn that silence into a claim that no adapter is needed. If two descriptions disagree, leave the relationship unresolved until the catalogue evidence is clarified.

Pairwise’s source path is bounded: it starts with the products the merchant selects and eligible links contained in those product descriptions. It does not make every unlinked manufacturer page or product-page highlight available to research. If the evidence is insufficient, Pairwise holds the pairing for merchant review rather than presenting uncertainty as a confirmed match. Source-backed recommendations · Prepare and review.

A synthetic example of supported and unresolved cases

The Synthetic example pairs Benchmark Trail Bottle 42 with Benchmark Flip Cap 42. The bottle description reads: “Synthetic test product, not for sale. A 600 ml bottle with a threaded 42 mm opening. Supplied with a plain screw lid. Optional flip-top caps must specify the same 42 mm thread. A second bottle is a substitute, not a complementary accessory.” The cap description reads: “Optional flip-top cap for bottles with the 42 mm thread used by Benchmark Trail Bottle 42.” This is the specific source passage shown for the synthetic pair, not a general product specification.

The Benchmark Travel Cap description reads: “A replacement travel cap. Compatible bottle models, thread and opening size have not been specified. Ask the merchant before pairing.” It stays held because the description does not establish the required compatible bottle model, thread or opening size. Its title cannot fill the gap. These catalogue details, prices and response are synthetic, not live model evidence, customer results or a guarantee for real bottles and caps. See the labelled example.

Review without guessing

For each candidate, inspect the exact variant and source excerpt. If a fit-critical fact is missing, keep the case unresolved; merchant review can accept, reject or continue inspecting a suggestion, but it cannot supply the missing source fact. For a separately supported pair, preview the intended product or cart placement in the target theme and check the shopper’s full-price action. If the merchant chooses to publish, Pairwise keeps that decision explicit: save the theme embed in Shopify’s editor, then publish the reviewed offers in Pairwise. Current workflow.

When the source does not establish the fact that makes a pair work, leave it unresolved. A held suggestion is a prompt to inspect the catalogue evidence, not a recommendation to guess.
