Before choosing an add-on app, write down the product set, shopper surface and buyer action you need. Then test how the app turns catalogue information into offers, what you must review, where the offer appears, and what happens when you edit, pause or remove it. Shopify’s app-selection guidance points merchants to descriptions, reviews, pricing, installation requirements, data access and privacy information; use those as starting evidence, not as a substitute for a store-specific test. Finding and choosing Shopify apps.
A practical evaluation checklist
- Define the job. Is the shopper adding a second product on a product page, choosing an item in the cart, buying a fixed bundle, selecting a variant, or seeing an offer in checkout? Shopify documents bundles, product variants and checkout extensions as distinct approaches; check current eligibility for the exact surface. Bundles · Variants · Checkout technologies.
- Ask what feeds the suggestion. Does the app use manual curation, catalogue relationships, purchase history or another documented input? What happens on a new catalogue, a missing fit detail, a conflicting source or a nearby but wrong variant? Ask to see the evidence behind one sample pair.
- Measure the whole merchant task. Include connecting, selecting products, understanding sources, resolving holds, editing, previewing and publishing. Record elapsed time and active review separately; a quick response alone does not describe the workflow.
- Test the exact storefront. Check the merchant’s theme and version, product template, mobile view, cart page and drawer separately. Verify the exact variant, inventory, currency, displayed price, discount and add action in a preview or test theme. Shopify’s theme app extension framework supports editor-managed blocks and embeds, but a framework does not prove an individual app supports every theme or placement. Theme app extensions.
- Check control and lifecycle. Can the merchant edit or reject a suggestion, pause an offer, and tell whether it is live? Which actions publish to the storefront? Shopify’s installation guidance explains how to review requested permissions; inspect the app’s privacy policy and its documented data-use and removal behavior before connecting store data. Install and set up apps.
- Compare the complete cost. Note recurring, one-time and usage-based charges, plan eligibility, external billing, support and any conditions on a trial. Confirm current prices on the app’s official listing and with the developer; marketplace reviews and badges are context, not proof of fit. Shopify describes app pricing and selection information and Built for Shopify requirements; a badge is not a store-specific compatibility test.
- Use the same small test for each candidate. Include one clear pair, one variant-sensitive case and one case with an important missing fact. Inspect the source and buyer path for each, and note what remains unknown rather than forcing every app to return an offer.
Apply the checklist to a synthetic example
The Synthetic example pairs Benchmark Trail Bottle 42 with Benchmark Flip Cap 42. The bottle source says: “Synthetic test product, not for sale. A 600 ml bottle with a threaded 42 mm opening. Supplied with a plain screw lid. Optional flip-top caps must specify the same 42 mm thread. A second bottle is a substitute, not a complementary accessory.” The cap source says: “Optional flip-top cap for bottles with the 42 mm thread used by Benchmark Trail Bottle 42.” Benchmark Travel Cap stays held because its description says: “A replacement travel cap. Compatible bottle models, thread and opening size have not been specified. Ask the merchant before pairing.” The example card carries the illustrative prices. These synthetic catalogue passages and response are not a real merchant result or a quality, compatibility or revenue measurement. Inspect the example.
Pairwise as one candidate
Pairwise prepares from products the merchant selects and eligible links in those products’ descriptions. It holds a pairing when those sources do not sufficiently support it. We have checked Pairwise on Shopify’s Horizon theme for specific documented placements; check whether your exact theme, template and placement are covered before choosing it. To publish, save the Pairwise theme embed in Shopify’s theme editor and separately publish the offers you reviewed in Pairwise. How Pairwise works · Theme support · Go-live steps.
Pairwise pricing is based on eligible Online Store order volume. That pricing basis is separate from catalogue selection limits and available AI service capacity; neither is an order allowance. Growth requires explicit merchant consent through Shopify. Check current pricing, plan conditions and limits on the Pairwise pricing page. A 7-day trial is available only if Shopify presents it and the merchant accepts it. Pairwise availability and the next step depend on its current Shopify listing status; check the Pairwise homepage for current availability.
Treat this checklist as a repeatable test, not a rating system. Choose the app that matches the catalogue and lets the merchant inspect and control the result; compare the work, evidence, storefront behavior, permissions and total bill using the same cases.
